বাক্যে কর্তা অতীতে কোনো কাজ না করে পারিনি এরুপ বুঝাতে-could not but- ব্যবহার করতে হয়।
বাক্যের গঠন: Sub+could not but+verb1+objects.
উদাহরণ:
আমি তাকে সাহায্য না করে পারিনি।
I could not but help him.
আমরা সেখানে না গিয়ে পারিনি।
We could not but go there.
সে আমাকে কল না করে পারিনি।
She could not but call me.

তাদের হৃদয় মানুষের দুঃখে কাদে না, বরং তাদের দ্বারাই মানুষ কষ্ট পায়।
They cannot but take pity on her if their hearts are human.
এরূপ বিপ্লব সৃজনশীল না হয়ে পারে না।
Such a revolution cannot but be creative.
আমি আমার ভাইয়ের আদেশ ছাড়া পিছু হটতে পারি না।
I cannot but carry out brother’s command.
এ হেকমত কেউ জানে; কেউ জানে না।
He who knows, cannot but know.
আমাকে মুক্তি দেন, আমি সংবিধানসম্মত প্রগতি এবং ইংরেজ সরকারের প্রতি আনুগত্যের সবচেয়ে একনিষ্ঠ না হয়ে পারি না।

I can’t but pray to obey the command of Great Allah.
আমি তার সাথে কথা না বলে থাকতে পারিনা।

আমরা গরীবদের পাশে না দাড়িয়ে পারিনা।
We can not but stand beside the poor.
সে মানুষের সমালোচনা না করে থাকতে পারেনা।
He can not but criticize people.
আমি বই না পড়ে থাকতে পারিনা।
