An Honest Wood-cutter
Completing Story Class-8: An Honest Wood-cutter: There lived an honest wood-cutter in a village. His village was beside a jungle. He used to cut wood from the jungle, sold in the nearby market and bore his family expenses. He was not rich but passed his life with great happiness.
One day, he was cutting wood near a pond in the jungle. At once his axe fell into the pond. The pond was very deep. The wood-cutter became very sad. He was at a loss what to do. Finding no other way, he prayed to God for help.
Then a strange incident occurred. A beautiful fairy came out of the water and advanced very near to the wood-cutter. The fairy asked him why he was not cutting wood. The wood-cutter described the incident in details. The fairy dived into the water and brought a silver axe. She asked him if it was his axe.
The wood-cutter saw the axe and said, “No. It’s not my axe.” Then the fairy showed him another axe made of gold and asked, “Is this the axe that you lost?” The wood-cutter said, “No. It’s not my axe. My axe was made of iron. It was old.”
The fairy showed him the lost axe with a wooden handle. The wood-cutter then said happily that it was exactly his axe. Seeing the strict honesty of the wood-cutter the fairy became very pleased and gave him both the gold and the silver axes along with his old iron axe.
Then, the wood-cutter became rich by selling two new precious axes. He left the deed of cutting wood and began to live happily. It was the reward of his honesty.

এক গ্রামে এক সৎ কাঠ কাটার বাস করত। তার গ্রাম ছিল জঙ্গলের পাশে। তিনি জঙ্গল থেকে কাঠ কেটে পাশের বাজারে বিক্রি করে সংসারের খরচ চালাতেন। তিনি ধনী ছিলেন না কিন্তু অত্যন্ত সুখে তার জীবন অতিবাহিত করেছিলেন।
একদিন সে জঙ্গলের একটি পুকুরের কাছে কাঠ কাটছিল। সাথে সাথে তার কুড়াল পুকুরে পড়ে যায়। পুকুরটি অনেক গভীর ছিল। কাঠ কাটার খুব দুঃখ হল। কি করা যায় তার একটা লোকসান ছিল। আর কোন উপায় না পেয়ে তিনি সাহায্যের জন্য ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রার্থনা করলেন।
তারপর এক অদ্ভুত ঘটনা ঘটল। একটি সুন্দর পরী জল থেকে বেরিয়ে কাঠ কাটার খুব কাছে এগিয়ে গেল। পরী তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো কেন সে কাঠ কাটছে না। কাঠ কাটার ঘটনাটি বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা করেছেন। পরী জলে ঝাঁপ দিয়ে একটি রূপার কুড়াল নিয়ে এল। তিনি তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন এটি তার কুঠার কিনা।
কাঠ কাটার কুড়াল দেখে বলল, “না। এটা আমার কুড়াল নয়।” তারপর পরী তাকে সোনার তৈরি আরেকটি কুড়াল দেখিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করল, “এটা কি সেই কুড়ালটা যেটা তুমি হারিয়েছ?” কাঠমিস্ত্রি বলল, “না। এটা আমার কুঠার না. আমার কুড়াল লোহার তৈরি। এটা পুরানো ছিল।”
পরী তাকে কাঠের হাতল দিয়ে হারানো কুড়ালটি দেখাল। কাঠমিস্ত্রি তখন খুশি হয়ে বলল, এটা ঠিক তার কুঠার। কাঠমিস্ত্রির কঠোর সততা দেখে পরী খুব খুশি হল এবং তাকে তার পুরানো লোহার কুড়াল সহ সোনা ও রূপার কুড়াল দিল।
তারপর, কাঠ কাটার নতুন দুটি মূল্যবান কুড়াল বিক্রি করে ধনী হয়ে গেল। কাঠ কাটার কাজ ত্যাগ করে সুখে সংসার করতে লাগলেন। এটা ছিল তার সততার পুরস্কার।
